FAQ
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a consultation as early as 7 years of age to screen for significant orthodontic issues.
Fixed Appliances
Fixed appliances are small square brackets bonded to each tooth being moved. These brackets have a horizontal slot for a wire to fit into. This wire is held in place by a ligature. These ligatures are usually made of an elastic material and come in various colors that can be changed at each patient visit. There are also self ligating brackets that do not use an external ligature to hold the main arch wire in and thus offer lower friction.
Brackets can either be composed of stainless steel (metal brackets) or ceramic (clear brackets), which are barely visible. If any brackets fall off during treatment, they can be easily replaced
Invisalign®
Invisalign® is a series of removable clear plastic trays for adults and teenagers. These trays are computer generated and are worn for about two weeks before moving on to the next tray. Each tray is incrementally moving the teeth and needs to be worn full time except when eating and brushing ones teeth. The length of treatment depends on the amount and nature of movement needed in your case. Not every case is a candidate for Invisalign and an initial consultation is needed.
The benefits of Invisalign are that the trays are close to invisible and can be removed so that brushing your teeth is easier than fixed appliances. However, this treatment is completely cooperation based. If the trays are not worn at least 20 hours per day until the completion of treatment, treatment will not be successful.
